
#10 Wallace State Sweeps Georgia Highlands in Doubleheader
After sweeping Northeast away on Sunday, the number ten-ranked Wallace State Lions hosted the Georgia Highlands Chargers out of Rome, GA. Wallace State won by a combined 16 runs as they swept the Chargers in both games by the score of 8-0.
The Lions are now 25-6 overall with a conference record of 9-1. The Chargers leave with a 19-11 record.
Game 1: Wallace State 8, Georgia Highlands 0
Brandy Phillips for Wallace State pitched a complete game shutout. She was on fire inside the circle, striking out eight Chargers batters and only allowing two hits.
Brooklyn Sertell scored the Lions' first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an error by the Charger's third baseman.
Charli Kyser fired Wallace State up in the fifth inning. She hit a two-RBI triple with two outs, running in Reese Decker and Tenayja Thomas. After a walk, Blakelyn Austin
doubled to left field. Kyser took advantage and sprinted home. Leah Graves then hit a hard grounder to left field, scoring Austin.
In the sixth inning, Decker scored after an error. Thomas then reached home after Burns' sac fly to left field to force the mercy rule.
Game 2: Wallace State 8, Georgia Highlands 0
Wallace State's Kyser lines to right field at the top of the first inning, which drove Phillips home to get the scoring started for the Lions.
The Lions scored again in the second inning off a successful bunt by Lexie Kelly, scoring Austin.
Wallace blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning when Decker hit a grounder to left field, running in Austin. Decker and Thomas scored on an error on a
hard-hit liner by Phillips.
The Lions would bat in three more in the sixth inning. With two outs, Kyser hit a 2 RBI triple, scoring Decker and Charley Walker. Kyser would then score when Sertell hit a
hard grounder to the Charger's shortstop. A second mercy rule would then be enforced.
Madeline Howard started the game in the circle, pitching two innings and earning the win. Payton Bailey and Ava Smith would pitch two innings each to combine for the shutout.
Next Thursday, the Wallace State Lions will travel to Muscle Shoals for a conference doubleheader against the Northwest-Shoals Patriots. This season, the Patriots are 4-4 in conference and 13-9 overall.
